sudden death of a young cat

21.07.2007

My 18 month old male cat, who was fit and healthy, eating well etc suddenly collapsed and died within about 15 seconds, before our eyes on Wednesday. He was fussing around and purring one minute, then collapsed, went stiff and arched his head back and let out a distressed cry and then died. He was a sleepy cat, not particularly energetic, and he was always yawning. What could have killed him? We are really concerned as we have his sister too.

very sorry to hear how you lost your kitty so suddenly - what a terrible thing to happen.

cause? tricky! - you say he was fit and healthy, but also say that he was sleepy without energy - in which case he may not have been quite so fit and healthy.
Sudden death like may well be from heart disease - most other conditions tend to cause illness preceding death. A post-mortem examination might be helpful, but will involve cost, and most people find this upsetting.
If you other cat is fit, lively, active, of normal weight in every respect, you probably have very little to fear. If in doubt, take you cat to the vet for a check-up
