equine - mateing

my pony has been gelded but keeps trying to mount my mare who is not in season

- laura

not-withstanding that we are a small animal vets, I did used to do a fair bit of equine work, so am happy to comment on this one:

if you had the horse gelded, you know he is a true gelding!

a lot of this behaviour is blamed on horses being a 'rig' - ie having a retained testicle that is not removed when the other testicle is castrated

however, no vet worth his salt would ever do this, and the mounting behaviour is due either to learned behaviour from his life as an entire male, or simply due to instinct that is not totally stopped by being castrated.

the only answer is to keep him away from mares in season!
