change of stool15.08.2006three or four times over the last two weeks my 11year old dog has had loose stools and also jelly like substance in it what is the cause - Isabell Tranter Hi Isabell this is colitis - inflammation of the large bowel. Normally, water is drawn out of the waste matter here, and mucus is secreted to lubricate the dry stools. In colitis, the inflammation triggers increased mucus production, and less water is absorbed. Somewtimes you will see blood as well. Fast your dog for 24 hours, then feed a bland diet (eg chicken and rice)little and often - perhaps 6 tiny meals a day for a couple of days. If this does not sort it, or if the stools get worse, veterinary attention is needed - pete coleshaw Back |
