Ringworm

08.02.2006

Could you tell me wether a ringworm lesion appears at the exact point of contact or is random? Also how long will the animal remain contagious to others?

- Karren

How ringworm appears on an animal depends on the species and even the type of fur on an affected animal. For instance long haired cats may show no obvious lesions, short haired cats however, can show crusting patches with hair loss.

The species of fungus (dermatophyte) causing ringworm also affects what it will look like and where and how it will occur.

Animals may be contagious to other animals for several months if left untreated and the disease can incubate for up to 4 weeks without being detectable. Ringworm may spontaneously resolve but treatment can speed up resolution

Hope this information is helpful
