help my baby is ill

can you help.my 6 year old german shephard( who has only ever been to the vets for his jabs)is having problems standing,walking and is disorientated.he is losing weight(its falling off him) drinking loads,eating less,very dopey,got a dry nose,sad painful look in his eyes.blood tests have come back negative and im really worried as to what it could be.i have to explain this to the kids too help

very sorry to hear about your poorly doggy.
unfortunately, this is one case where we can probably help you very little : there are a number of things that might be causing the symptoms you describe, and in some cases it can take very extensive investigations to find the cause.

sometimes it may be necessary to refer a pet to a specialist centre for tests that are not available in the average practice, and I think that this is something you should consider and discuss with your vet. The only reservation about this is that specialist expertise and equipment does not come cheap : you could be talking of several thousand pounds worth of investigations, particularly if MRI scans are needed. If he is insured then of course this is not a problem.
